Program Note

Inspired by the Prelude to Bach’s 3rd Cello Suite, Bill Ryan’s Original Blend, and the EDM and avant-jazz inflected style of the band Archie Pelago, In Stability is built at the tension point between stability and instability. While writing this piece, I became interested in a fundamental truth of these two concepts that is cleanly expressed by juxtaposing them: “In stability, instability.”

We all want stability and safety, but this desire too easily morphs into a quest for control. However, this quest ignores (or attempts to ignore) that much of life is in fact uncontrollable. There is another way, though: by accepting and even relishing the fundamental uncontrollability of life, we can find more of what we were seeking in the first place: peace. In Stability takes the same journey, teetering from stability into control before collapsing and rebuilding more durably than before.
