Program Note
"Groove" is an amazingly multifaceted word. It can mean everything from "relishing an experience" (grooving) to "feeling trapped in a routine" (being stuck in a groove). In music, in particular the jazz idiom, it can describe "performing well, in an effortless fashion". However, my favorite meaning for groove is "to interact in a harmonious way".
Through blending the styles of master pianist-composers Sergei Rachmaninoff and Chick Corea, this piece explores these varied definitions of groove. The title serves as the central question: what does it mean for music, and life, to have maximum groove?
