Program Note

My favorite season has always been spring. I love the feeling of growth in the air and the vivid green of new leaves. When I first came across Marion Strobel’s poem Spring Morning, I immediately heard a dancing rhythmic drive in the text that communicated the excitement I’ve always felt about springtime. Taking inspiration from two of my favorite pieces of contemporary choral repertoire (Marie-Claire Saindon’s Turlutte Acadienne Montrealaise and Eric Whitacre’s With A Lily In Your Hand) while also incorporating my interest in jazz vocal writing, I created this piece to celebrate the beauty of spring days.

As an alumni of Gray’s Creek High School’s choral program, it was a joy to collaborate with Amy Stovall and the 2024-2025 GCHS Chorale to create this piece, something I would have loved to sing when I was in high school myself. I am grateful to have had the chance to create a piece for the next generation of choral musicians to sing.
